Travel from Shah Alam to Alor Setar
Traveling to Kedah in the north, and particularly its capital city Alor Setar can be a very time consuming affair. If you are traveling from Shah Alam, usually your journey will begin at the Shah Alam bus terminal at Section 13. There are more than a handful of bus operators that you can travel with, including Eagle Ekspress, Intercity Coach, KPB Express and Hatyai Intertop Express. Depending on which bus operator you choose and the traffic conditions as well as the number of stops being made, you will arrive at Terminal Shahab in Alor Setar within 6-8 hours. There are usually up to 7 or 8 trips a day and they usually depart before 12noon and after 8pm.
In Alor Setar you can get a clear panoramic view of the city from Alor Setar Tower, which stands tall at 155 meters and houses some restaurants and souvenir shops for visitors. It’s also a very practical structure that functions as a telecommunications tower on a daily basis. Art lovers are in for a treat when they visit the State Art Gallery or Balai Seni Negeri where various paintings, photographs and crafts from the state are on display. A fuller picture of Kedah’s culture and practices can be seen from its royal buildings like the Balai Besar, a centuries old building that is still being used today for Royal events like installations and weddings. Nearby that is a tower known as the Balai Nobat where the royal musicians store their instruments, practice and play music during special occasions.
Another interesting attraction to visit would definitely be the birthplace of Dr. Mahathir Mohamad who was the fourth and longest serving Malaysian Prime Minister. His old family home is at Kampung Seberang Perak and houses a lot of paraphernalia from Tun Dr Mahathir’s early life. A lovely attraction you can’t miss here is also the Zahir State mosque which is the oldest mosque in Alor Setar. Since Alor Setar is so close to Thailand, you’ll find some really tasty Thai food eateries in town.
