Ipoh is an old tin mining town in Perak that is rich in culture and history, especially that of its local inhabitant Chinese community. This is evident from the number of Chinese temples including the Sam Poh Tong temple, Ling Sen Tong temple, Nan Tian Tong temple and Kek Look Tong temple at the base of Ipoh’s famous limestone hills. Speaking of limestone hills, you shouldn’t miss out on visiting Gua Tempurung, in Gopeng, which is 20 minutes south of Ipoh. Gua Tempurung is a spectacular limestone cave which is 3 km long as you can venture into the cave to gaze at its natural rock formation as well as stalactites and stalagmites. If you travel further down south from Ipoh, you’ll find the iconic Kellie’s Castle, an abandoned 1915 mansion that was built by Willian Kellie Smith, which has been left incomplete until today. Back in Ipoh town, you’ll want to visit the Han Chin Pet Soo museum, where you can learn how life was like for the early settlers of Ipoh, who were mainly tine miners. If you have the time, you’ll want to walk around the old quarter of Ipoh town with its maze of pre-war shop houses. Here you’ll find plenty of street art to take selfies with, as well as some of the most delicious signature Ipoh dishes, like Sar Hor Fun, beansprout chicken rice, egg caramel custards, Hakka noodles , Nasi Kandar and Ipoh white coffee.
