Things to do in Alor Setar
Alor Setar is the state capital of Kedah and it is the birthplace of two Prime Ministers – YTM Tunku Abdul Rahman, Malaysia's first Prime Minister, and Tun Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad, Malaysia's fourth Prime Minister. Rumah Kelahiran Mahathir (Mahathir’s Birthplace), a traditional Malaysian house, is now preserved as a small but worthwhile museum. You may visit the place to witness the family effects, photos, and the influential politician’s old bicycle.
You may also head on to Wat Nikrodharam to appreciate the impressive Buddhist temple complex. History enthusiasts may visit Muzium Diraja, the former royal palace for the royals from 1856. Kota Kuala Kedah (Kuala Kedah Fort) is also another magnificent structure; it is the remains of a fort that protected the Kuala Kedah Kingdom from naval attacks by the Portuguese, Achenese, and Bugis.
A visit to Alor Setar will not be complete without a trip to Pekan Rabu. Literally translated as “Wednesday Market”, it is one of the best places to get traditional Malay foods such as serunding, dodol durian, rojak, and belacan. The multi-storeys arcade selling a wide range of traditional delicacies, handicraft products, and apparel is open from 8am to 9pm daily. Due to the conservative nature of the state, Alor Setar does not offer much entertainment for the nightlife. Nonetheless, you may get your beauty sleep and rest to recharge for your travel itinerary the next day.
